Rent, lease or buy a truck: which makes sense?

Updated October 2026

Renting costs the most per month but has the least commitment, which makes it good for short needs or testing the waters. Leasing locks in a set payment for a longer term, usually with mileage and condition rules. Buying builds ownership but needs a down payment, financing and money set aside for repairs.

A simple rule of thumb

Rent for weeks to a few months, lease when you want predictable payments without owning, and buy when you're confident in steady freight and can handle repairs.
