Plates, IRP and IFTA with a rented truck
Updated October 2026
Trucks that run between states usually need apportioned registration (IRP plates), and fuel taxes are reported under IFTA. With a rental, it's important to know who handles each.
Ask the owner
Does the truck have apportioned plates for the states you'll run? Who files the IFTA fuel tax reports, and who pays them? Does the truck have the permits you need, like a heavy vehicle use tax record?
Why it matters
Running without the right plates or permits can mean fines and delays at inspection. Settle it before you take the truck, and keep copies of the documents in the cab.
Rules depend on the truck, the states and your setup. Confirm with the owner and your state agencies.
