How semi truck rental works for owner-operators
Updated October 2026
Renting a truck lets you haul without buying one: to start your business, cover a breakdown, add capacity in a busy season, or test a truck before you buy.
Common rental terms
Rates are usually daily, weekly or monthly, and longer rentals cost less per day. Many rentals include a set number of miles, then charge per mile over that. Expect a deposit, and ask whether maintenance, tires and roadside help are included.
What owners usually ask for
A valid CDL of the right class, a clean driving record, proof of insurance, and sometimes your own operating authority. Some owners rent only to experienced drivers.
Before you sign
Read the agreement closely, inspect the truck with the owner, and take dated photos of its condition. Use our pre-rental checklist.
