What to check before you rent a truck

Updated October 2026

Inspect the truck with the owner before you take it, and document what you find.

Check

Tires and brakes, lights, fluid leaks, the condition of the cab and sleeper, the ELD and any in-cab equipment, the mileage, the fuel level, and existing damage. Take dated photos and video of every side.

Paperwork

Registration, proof of insurance, permits and the signed rental agreement should be in the truck.

Use our printable pre-rental checklist; it saves your progress on your phone.
